Julie Paquette Counselling

I provide down to earth counselling in person in Squamish or online.

I can work with youth and adult, speaking either in French or English.

Counselling is a tool to find direction and start moving again.

This means learning about yourself and developing skills and abilities to navigate through difficulties and overcome challenges. We each have our own map where we plot our course as we progress through life. Sometimes the going is smooth. Sometimes we come across obstacles and confusing junctions, get lost or go around in circles.

Together, we will take concrete steps to improve your situation, now and for the future.

About Julie

Born in Montreal, my need to see the horizon from a pebbled shore or a mountain ridge brought me to Squamish. Now this is my home since I found here the lifestyle that suits me. I run in the woods, play in my garden or explore with friends. And just sitting with a cup of coffee can be plenty. I am happy to contribute in my modest way to the great community of Squamish!

I strive to be approachable and realistic in the support I provide. This means that I ask for feedback, can see humour when its there, and share knowledge when its needed.

Evidence-based counselling practices guide my work. Principles of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy steer my practice, as well as elements from solution focused brief therapy, mindfulness and other modalities, depending on the situation.

I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BCACC (#15433).

Frequently asked questions

+What can be signs that me or someone I know should see a counsellor?

It is normal to want to fix problems on our own, but if after trying different strategies and the problem remain or gets worse, then it is often time to take a new approach. Speaking to an objective professionnal, in confidentiality, can bring clarity and relief to a challenging time. Here are some specific signs to be aware of : a worsening of the situation, not feeling like yourself, trouble sleeping, experiencing strong emotions or feeling ‘numb’ low motivation, the problem takes all the attention or it impacts work/school/other people, avoidance, thinking of ending your life, using alcohol or drugs to cope.

+ What does a first session looks like?

Prior to our first meeting, there will be an intake form to fill.  When we meet, we will firstly discuss confidentiality and any questions you might have. Then, we will discuss the reasons that led you to see me and how you would like your situation to be different. Thirdly, I will ask general questions to start getting a portrait of yourself. We might also have time to clarify goals or set priorities. Finally, I might suggest a few actions for you to take until our next meeting.

+Is counselling covered by insurance providers?

MSP does not cover Registered Clinical Counsellors at this time. Should you have another insurance provider, contact them directly to see if counselling services are covered. I provide the necessary information for you to make a claim directly to your provider in order to be reimbursed.

+ How many sessions can I expect?

Typically, we can have between 5 to 8 weekly or bi-weekly meetings. We might continue to meet regularly or decide to space out the sessions to touch base together once in a while. This is something we will discuss together and agree upon.

+My child is coming to see you. Does it mean that I will be doing counselling too?

When working with a child, I will include parents in the process in some way, depending on the situation. At least, we will take some time each session to discuss how the situation is evolving from the perspective of the parents. Also, strategies that are discussed with your child can be shared with you.  Including parents might also mean that we have sessions with the whole family or only with parents. Whenever information is shared with parents, it is done while respecting confidentiality.
